Making Assumptions

The origin of the old phrase “When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me” goes back at least to Oscar Wilde, but my introduction to it came from a different Oscar entirely—Oscar and Felix in The Odd Couple.


We make assumptions constantly, often unintentionally.


Some writers assume the reader will follow without guideposts. Other writers assume the reader needs dozens of guideposts in glowing neon.


And in the photo below, the sign makers assumed the spirit of the law would trump the letter.
